UNDER $50 or under $40 for a half bottle. A very well known and popular red blend, that’s artwork pushes the boundaries just as much as its taste.
What I love about the wine
Well, this bottle of Prisoner is a nice blend of lessons learned. This bottle of wine has taught me not to judge a book by its cover. When you think of a prisoner you think of someone who was locked up for doing something bad. So I almost thought bad when I first saw the bottle. Then I saw the price tag and it’s roughly $40 – $50. So I thought well maybe it is good. After all, can someone really be so bold as to price a wine in this range and it’s going to suck. Then I noticed the back of the bottle said Red Blend. Now I’m thinking what? $50 bucks for a bottle red blend? These people are out of their minds. I have to try to see what the hype is all about.
I am not a fan of following what the cool kids say is cool and paying a high price for it. So I will admit that I went into this bottle wanting to hate it. I was very hard on this bottle of wine. I loved that it was very Zinfandel forward. It blended nicely the mix of other grapes that include, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Syrah, and Charbono. To my surprise I really enjoyed the bottle of Prisoner.
But how does it taste?
When Zinfandel grapes are fully ripe they contain high amounts of sugar, so I understand why this wine is thought to be sweet. However, if I closed my eyes and sipped my glass of The Prisoner, sweet would not be the first word that came to mind. Is there a sweetness to this red blend, a little, but I actually felt this wine was more on the dry side. So if you are not a fan of sweet wines don’t let the Zinfandel grape turn you off. The other grapes really balance out the bottle.
